Most merchants also offer a range of free or trial products, so that affiliates can try out various affiliate marketing strategies before making a purchase. Other types of affiliate marketing programs include Pay Per Click, PPC, Content Marketing, Google AdSense, and Joint Ventures. Pay per click affiliate programs are run by search engines such as Google. PPC is paid for each click on an ad; content marketing is pay per post. Google AdSense is a type of PPC, where your affiliates are rewarded every time someone clicks on one of the adverts on your website. A great example of this is YouTube, which runs a video affiliate program.

Affiliate programs used to be seen as black hat, because the merchants were not providing any benefits in return for the promotion, and there were not any guidelines for affiliates to follow.
