What Are The Pros And Cons Of Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing by definition is an act of advertising where independent marketers known as affiliates earn a fixed commission paid solely when sales are completed, leads are converted, or when any qualified action occurs. The best way to understand affiliate marketing is by first defining what it is not. Affiliate marketing is not pay-per-click advertising. Pay-per-click advertising requires payment from the publisher per click and is considered pay-for-performance marketing. Affiliate marketing is not pay-per-sale marketing and, therefore, does not require payments of any kind.

There are many myths associated with affiliate marketing and, as such, there are some false advertising as well. One such myth is that affiliate marketing requires a lot of hard work. Nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, affiliate marketing requires very little effort on the part of the affiliate. In fact, there is virtually no effort required on the part of the affiliates and they can generally perform their marketing duties from the comfort of their home.

Another false advertising myth concerns the importance of creating a website for an affiliate marketer. A website is actually not necessary for being an affiliate marketer; however, it is certainly helpful in increasing the overall effectiveness of the entire marketing plan. By having a well written website, the affiliate marketer is able to market his/her products and services to a much greater number of potential customers. For the affiliate marketer, having a well written website is almost like building a brand and identity for themselves.

Then, there are the cons. To begin with, it must be said that there are both pros and cons associated with affiliate marketing. One of the main pros of affiliate marketing is that it does provide a great way to earn some additional income. Affiliate marketers are typically paid on a percentage basis, which means that they get a portion of what the customer purchases from their business. This is usually a good amount and can easily provide a supplemental income for most people.

Also, affiliate marketing does have many advantages. One of the most apparent advantages to affiliate online presence is that it virtually eliminates the need for the merchant to have any type of overhead. Affiliate marketers only need to create a website and the merchant will take care of everything else. Therefore, it eliminates the need for the merchant to purchase supplies in bulk and store them. Because the affiliate marketer does not have to handle inventory or any of the other mundane aspects involved with running a retail business, this can free up a significant amount of money for the merchant.

There are other advantages to affiliate marketing as well. Because the merchant already has a website, there is no need for the affiliate marketers to worry about creating one. Instead, all that the affiliate marketer needs to do is simply to promote the merchant's products and receive a commission based on the sales. Also, since the merchants do not have to pay anything upfront, there is no reason to offer a discount to entice visitors to the site. Finally, since there is very little cost involved, the commission rates can be exceptionally high based on the amount of traffic directed to the site.

However, some disadvantages to affiliate marketing exist as well. First, it is important for marketers to make sure that they are advertising products in a manner that will draw visitors to the site. The problem with this is that often times the advertisers will place banners on sites that are inappropriate for their product. In addition, merchants and affiliates may have come into contact with each other and want to make money by dishonest means, which can result in serious legal actions.

Affiliate marketers also need to realize that although there is minimal risk involved in affiliate marketing, they still need to make sure that they take proper precautions. After all, they are still dealing with people who can click for any number of reasons on the Internet. For example, marketers need to make sure that their website and the products they are advertising are well designed so that visitors are attracted to them. Also, marketers need to make sure that their list of affiliate partners is large enough to ensure that any sales generated are in fact legitimate. Finally, affiliate marketing is only a good business strategy if the marketer takes a strong stance against fraud. By taking the time to run an effective fraud prevention program, marketers can greatly increase the amount of revenue that they generate and reduce the amount of time and effort that is spent dealing with fraudulent customers.
