What Is Proton?

Proton is a privacy company based in Switzerland. It makes a set of apps that do everyday jobs, like email, cloud storage and passwords, but with encryption built in.

Think of it as a private alternative to the big tech accounts most of us use. Same jobs. Less data handed over.

Here's what you get under one Proton account:

• Proton Mail: encrypted email, with custom domains and hide-my-email aliases on paid plans
• Proton VPN: a VPN with a free tier and paid plans for more devices and countries
• Proton Pass: a password manager with passkey support and built-in email aliases
• Proton Drive: encrypted cloud storage for files and photos
• Proton Calendar and Wallet: an encrypted calendar and a Bitcoin wallet

How Does Proton Work?

For Users

1. Create a free Proton account. No credit card is needed for the free plan.
2. Use one app, or all of them, with the same login.
3. Upgrade to a single-product plan (like Mail Plus or VPN Plus) or the all-in-one Proton Unlimited when you need more storage, devices or features.
4. Your data is encrypted, so Proton is designed not to be able to read your emails or files.

For Affiliates

1. Apply to the Proton Partners Program on Proton's affiliate page.
2. Once approved, log into the partner dashboard to get your links and marketing materials.
3. Write helpful content (reviews, comparisons, how-tos) that sends readers to your site first, then to Proton.
4. Earn a commission on new paid subscriptions, plus a share of renewals.
5. Get paid by bank transfer once your balance clears the minimum.

Proton Pricing

Proton advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee on its paid plans. Business plans are priced separately, so check their site for those.

Always check Proton's pricing page for current numbers. Plans change.

Who Should Use Proton?

Users

Proton is a good fit for anyone who's tired of their inbox being scanned, their files sitting on someone else's ad-funded servers, or their passwords living in a spreadsheet.

It suits journalists, freelancers, small business owners and regular people who simply want more privacy. If you'd like one account that covers email, VPN, passwords and storage, Proton Unlimited makes that simple.

Affiliates

If you run a site about privacy, cybersecurity, remote work, tech tools or "best VPN" style comparisons, Proton is a natural offer. It's a brand people already recognize, and the free plan lowers the barrier for readers.

And because there are several products, you're not stuck writing about just one thing. VPN content, email content and password manager content can all point to the same program.

Pros and Cons of Proton

Pros

• A real free plan for Mail, VPN, Pass and Drive
• One account covers a whole suite of privacy apps
• Low entry prices for single products like Pass Plus and VPN Plus
• 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans
• Strong, well-known privacy brand, which helps conversions

Cons

• The free plan is tight: 1 GB of mail storage and 150 messages a day
• The best prices need a yearly or two-year commitment
• Encryption means some features (like searching old email) can feel slower or more limited than Gmail
• Switching email providers takes effort, so some readers will hesitate
• For affiliates, most products pay 30%, with the higher rates on VPN only

Proton vs Alternatives

If your reader mostly wants a clean, ad-free inbox without the encryption focus, read my Fastmail review. If passwords are the main worry, my Keeper Security review is a good comparison to Proton Pass.

For readers who want device protection like antivirus, see my Bitdefender review. And if backup is the real need, my IDrive review covers that side.

How to Make Money with Proton as an Affiliate

The Commission

Here's what Proton's own affiliate page says right now:

• Proton VPN: 100% of the first payment on new 1-month plans, 40% on new 1- or 2-year plans, and 30% on renewals
• Proton Mail, Drive and Pass (and Lumo): 30% on new plans and 30% on renewals
• Payout: direct bank transfer on the 30th of the following month, once your balance is over $100 (smaller amounts carry forward)
• Network: Proton runs its own in-house Proton Partners Program with its own dashboard
• Cookie length: not stated on the public page, so check their site or ask the partner team

The rules matter. No bidding on Proton brand names in paid ads, and paid traffic should land on your own site first. No spam, no cookie-stuffing, no sub-affiliates, no adult or gambling sites. You also need to disclose your affiliate relationship and keep reviews honest.

That last rule is good news for SEO affiliates. Honest, helpful content is exactly what Proton wants.

Content Angles That Work

1. "Private Gmail alternative" content. Lots of people want out of Gmail but don't know where to go. A calm, step-by-step switching guide sends readers to Proton Mail naturally.
2. VPN comparisons and "is the free VPN enough?" posts. The VPN pays the highest rates, so this is where the bigger commissions are. Be honest about when the free plan is enough and when it isn't.
3. Privacy stack posts. Show readers how one account covers email, passwords and storage. Pair it with tools you've already reviewed, like my Aura review for identity protection.

Final Thoughts

Proton is one of the easiest privacy brands to recommend. It's well known, it has a free plan, and it covers several jobs in one account.

For affiliates, it's a solid program with clear rules. The VPN pays the most. The other products pay a steady 30%, including renewals. Write honest, helpful content, send readers to your site first, and let the brand do some of the work.
