Toggl Review: How to Make Money as an Affiliate

Disclosure: some links in this post are affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What Is Toggl?

Toggl is a time tracking and planning tool. You hit a timer when you start working, stop it when you're done, and Toggl tells you exactly where your hours went.

That sounds small. It isn't.

Most of us guess how long things take. And most of us guess wrong. Toggl replaces the guessing with real numbers, so you can bill clients properly, price your work better, and stop wondering why the week disappeared.

You may know the older names, Toggl Track and Toggl Plan. Toggl now brings time tracking and planning together under one Toggl app. The older apps are still supported for existing users.

Here's what you get:

  • One-click and manual timers on desktop, mobile, and in your browser
  • Calendar integrations, so you can turn meetings into time entries
  • Tasks, boards, and task estimates for planning your work
  • Reports that show where your time goes, by project, client, or person
  • Billable rates and team reports on paid plans
  • Profitability reports, fixed fee projects, and timesheet approvals on higher plans
  • Integrations with tools like Jira and Asana

One more thing worth knowing. Toggl publicly says it doesn't monitor employees. No screenshots, no keystroke logging, no location tracking. For a lot of teams, that's a big deal.

How Does Toggl Work?

Toggl is simple at its core. You track time, you tag it to a project, and you look at the reports.

For Users

  1. Create a free account. No credit card needed.
  2. Set up your clients and projects.
  3. Start a timer when you begin a task. Stop it when you finish.
  4. Forgot to start the timer? Add the time manually, or pull it in from your calendar.
  5. Check your reports at the end of the week to see where your hours went.
  6. Upgrade to Starter or Premium when you need billable rates, team reports, or approvals.

For Affiliates

  1. Apply to Toggl's partner program, which runs on PartnerStack.
  2. Once approved, grab your tracking link from your PartnerStack dashboard.
  3. Recommend Toggl in helpful content, like reviews, tutorials, and comparisons.
  4. Earn a commission on the first payment from each customer you refer.

Toggl Pricing

Toggl has a free plan and three paid tiers. Prices are per user, per month. Paying yearly saves you money.

Plan Billed Monthly Billed Yearly Who It's For
Free $0 $0 Freelancers and very small teams (their FAQ says up to 3 users)
Starter $12/user/month $9/user/month Teams that bill by the hour (billable rates, tags, team reports)
Premium $24/user/month $16/user/month Teams that care about profit (profitability reports, approvals, SSO)
Enterprise Custom Custom Larger companies that need onboarding and custom setups

Starter and Premium both come with a 30-day free trial. There are also paid add-ons for time off management and capacity planning.

So which plan do most people need? If you're a freelancer, start free. Seriously. The free plan does the main job. Move up when you're running a team and need billable rates or approvals.

Always check Toggl's pricing page for current numbers. Plans change.

How to Make Money with Toggl as an Affiliate

Toggl's partner program runs on PartnerStack. Here's what Toggl's own partner terms say:

  • Commission: 30% of Toggl's net revenue from the referred customer's payment
  • One-time, not recurring: only the customer's very first payment counts
  • Locking period: that payment has to clear a 45-day lock before it's yours
  • Payouts: usually by PayPal, with a $5 minimum. Payments can be as infrequent as every 90 days.
  • Cookie length: not stated in the terms, so check inside your dashboard
  • Not allowed: paid ads on Toggl terms, bidding on the Toggl brand name, public coupon codes, cashback schemes, and spam

Notice the word "first." That changes how you should think about this program.

A team that pays yearly makes a much bigger first payment than one person paying monthly. So the best referrals are teams on annual plans. Write for agency owners and team leads, not just solo freelancers on the free plan.

If PartnerStack is new to you, my PartnerStack review explains how it works. And if your readers bill clients, my FreshBooks review is a natural fit to link alongside Toggl, since tracked hours turn into invoices.

Content Angles That Work

  1. "How I track my freelance hours" posts. Show your real setup and your weekly report. Real numbers build trust.
  2. Comparisons. Toggl vs Clockify, Toggl vs Harvest. People searching these are close to choosing.
  3. Agency profitability guides. How to find out which clients actually make you money, with Toggl as the tool.

Keyword Ideas

  • Toggl review
  • Toggl vs Clockify
  • Toggl vs Harvest
  • best time tracking app for freelancers
  • best time tracking software for agencies
  • how to track billable hours

Since paid ads on Toggl terms aren't allowed, SEO is the main way to win here. That's good news if you're building content sites.

And if you like the productivity niche, my Todoist review covers another easy tool to recommend to the same readers.
